Rex E. Lee (JD, Univ. of Chicago ’63).  Rex Lee served as Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Division in the United States Department of Justice from 1975 to 1976, and then as Solicitor General of the United States from 1981 to 1985. As US Solicitor General, he won 22 of 30 cases he argued before the Supreme Court.  He also argued 59 cases before the Supreme Court as a private attorney.  He became the founding Dean of BYU law school in in 1971, and President of BYU in 1989, while continuing to argue nine cases before the Supreme Court.  At the time of his passing in 1996, he was preparing to argue his 60th case before the Court.  Associate Justice Byron White said that Lee “was an experienced, careful, and very brainy advocate. And he was the epitome of integrity on whom we could rely for straight talk about the cases coming before the court.”

Elder Larry Echohawk (JD, Univ. of Utah ’73).  Echohawk served as staff attorney with California Indian Legal Services from 1973–1975; Special Prosecutor for the Navajo Nation in 1985; Chief General Counsel of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes from 1977–1986; member of the Idaho House of Representatives from 1982–1986; Bannock County Prosecuting Attorney from 1986–1990; Attorney General of Idaho from 1990–1994; professor of law at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU from 1994–2009; and Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs, U.S. Department of the Interior from 2009 to 2012.  Under his administration the amount of land held in trust by the Federal Government for Native American groups was increased by 158,000 acres. He also oversaw several water agreements for Native American groups, and the formation of the Tribal Leadership Conference which provides for an annual meeting between leaders or other representatives of the 566 federally recognized tribes and the United States President and all members of the Cabinet.
