Please join us as we hear from Oscar W. & Carol F. McConkie about how the Wasatch Front Service Mission provides legal aid for the poor. Learn how the Wasatch Front Service Mission aligns with the Utah Intergenerational Poverty Mitigation Act by creating a program to help individuals and families in the state to break the cycle of poverty.

Speaker Biographies:

Oscar W. and Carol F. McConkie met and were married in Mesa, Arizona in 1973. They are Mission Leaders of the Wasatch Front Service Mission, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were formerly Government Affairs missionaries representing Latter-day Saint Charities at the United Nations in Geneva Switzerland. In that capacity, they also served as International Fellows for the International Center for Law and Religion Studies, of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University

President McConkie is a former president of Kirton McConkie. His practice focused on Immigration and Nationality Law. As an immigration lawyer, he represented clients from over 100 countries in the world. He was a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and served as Chair of the Utah Chapter. He was appointed by Utah Governor, Michael O. Leavitt, to serve as a member of the Appellate Court Nominating Commission.

Apart from extensive service and participation in the legal profession, President McConkie has served in his community and Church. He was Chair and Board Member of the Salt Lake Education Foundation. He has served as Mission President of the California San Jose Mission, Stake President, bishop, and other Church callings.

He received B.A. and M.A. degrees from Arizona State University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Utah.

Sister McConkie is concurrently serving as Vice President of the NGO Committee on the Status of Women in Geneva Switzerland. She is a former General Young Women Presidency Counselor of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She received her BS degree from Arizona State University in English Education. Her community and Church service include an appointment to the Third District Court Nominating Commission by former Governor Michael O. Leavitt, leadership in the Parent Teacher Association at Clayton Middle School in Salt Lake City, as a Young Women General Board member, as mission leader in the California San Jose Mission with her husband, and in a variety of other church and community assignments.

They are the parents of seven children, 39 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters.
