The Ghana Accra Chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society received the 2023 Franklin S. Richards Public Service Award. Through The Franklin S. Richards Public Service Award the Law Society honors those whose selfless service epitomizes the virtues the Society espouses. These virtues include service to the poor, needy, and disadvantaged, community outreach which fosters greater understanding of and compliance with the rule of law and actions and influence which improve the legal community’s ability to provide justice for all.

Members of the Ghana Chapter understand the essence of giving back to society and the core mandate of the Law Society. As such, the Chapter made it a point to participate in the service activity in March 2022.

The Service Committee of the Chapter, acting on the directives of the Executive Committee organized an outreach to young Ghanaian students of Golden Gate International School, Adenta community, Accra. Both lawyers and law students of the Chapter participated in this outreach.

The theme was centered on child defilement and indecent sexual assault. A presentation was made from a legal perspective and in a more practical manner. Students were informed of the criminal nature of indecent sexual assault and the need for them to protect themselves from such abuse.

Also, with cognizance of the global village and its menace, students were made to understand that indecent sexual assault can also take place via the use of the internet. Guidance was provided to students on how to use the internet safely and most important, to report incidents of sexual assault perpetrated against them to their parents, and other elderly persons in a position of trust. Students were informed of situations that can lead to sexual assault and how to avoid such situations.

The session was very interactive, as the students asked pertinent questions and were answered in simple terms.

This activity was carried out on 31 March 2022.
