Dan Harris has had a long and distinguished legal career in Oregon. Before graduating from University of Oregon School of Law, he worked in government as a legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Mark Hatfield and as a junior lobbyist in civil litigation and government sections for a D.C. firm. Post graduation, he continued with some government and legislative work but shifted his primary focus to civil trial cases and municipal law employed by several firms in Oregon. He also devoted considerable time to the Jackson County Bar as its President, and to his community, once creating and moderating a cable TV series called, "The People's Law Forum," a series devoted to educating the public about different areas of the law.
Brother Harris was appointed to the bench by the Governor in 1997 and was elected to 3 terms as a Circuit Court Judge. During his tenure he was selected by the Chief Justice to the panel of Circuit Court judges designated to handle complex civil cases throughout the State of Oregon. Among other distinctions, he was also awarded the 2010 Wallace P. Caron, Jr. Award for Judicial Excellence, given by the OSB to a "current state or federal court judge who has made significant contributions to the judicial system and who is a model of professionalism, integrity, and judicial independence."
Brother Harris retired from the bench in 2013 and formed Harris Mediation & Arbitration firm, offering dispute resolution services in Portland, Salem, Eugene, Central and Southern Oregon. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brother Harris paused his career to serve as Assistant Area Legal Counsel for Eastern Europe based in Moscow from 2017-2019. In 2022, he was called to be a counselor in the Portland Temple Presidency from which he was just recently released. He and his wife Susan have been married 46 years and are the proud parents of 5 adult children.
