On November 21, 2025, the Africa Central, South and West Areas of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society held a Tri-Area Virtual Conference on the topic of preserving religious freedom in Africa. This event focused on the intersection of constitutional law, human rights, and cultural diversity across the continent. It also examined how African nations balance religious liberty with state interests, social cohesion, and security concerns.
The keynote address was given by Barrister Declan Madu, a seasoned legal practitioner based in Nigeria with vast experience in both private and public law. Mr. Madu also served as the first chair of the Africa West Chapter of the Law Society when it was formed in 2010. During his message, Mr. Madu addressed the following topics:
Constitutional Protections: Most African constitutions guarantee freedom of religion, but enforcement varies widely.
Challenges: Issues relating to religious discrimination, restrictions on minority faiths, and conflicts between customary law and modern legal frameworks exist in many nations in Africa.
International Standards: The role of international treaties (e.g., African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights) in shaping national policies.
Case Studies: Examples from countries where religious freedom has been tested, highlighting both progress and setbacks.
Future Directions: Calls for stronger judicial independence, inclusive policymaking, and regional cooperation to safeguard religious rights.
Mr. Madu brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the event, engaging participants with insightful discussions and practical advice on preserving religious freedom in their countries and addressing the difficult realities involved with preserving religious liberty. At the end of Mr. Madu’s remarks, attendees expressed deep appreciation for the initiative, highlighting the importance of the conference in fostering a stronger faith in Jesus Christ and respecting the laws of nations.
In addition to Mr. Madu’s address, the conference also included Area updates by Ike Anslem, Africa West Area Chair; Matthieu Manga Kalota, Africa Central Area Chair; and Siya Mkhize, Africa South Area Chair. An introduction to the J. Reuben Clark Law Society was given by Amy Larsen, Executive Director, and closing remarks were provided by Angel Zimmerman, International Chair. Forrest Hansen, the former Executive Director of the Law Society, and Lee Wright, Associate General Counsel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, each gave short remarks. Dorcus Marumo, Africa South Area Events Chair, conducted the conference, and coordinated many details relating to the event.
More than 80 participants viewed the proceedings online from across Africa and beyond. Additionally, a group of JRCLS members in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Kinshasa Chapter gathered at a local church building to view the conference together.
We express appreciation to all those who participate in the event and for the ongoing support of JRCLS members in Africa who devote their time and legal expertise to defending religious freedom in their communities and nations.
